Active Release Technique: Frequently Asked Questions

Active Release Technique in New JErsey

What is Active Release Technique?
ART is a system of specific movements and massage methods designed to help alleviate pain and increase mobility. It works as a muscle pain treatment because it helps treat muscles, tendons and ligaments stuck underneath a build-up of scar tissue.

Is ART painful?
The first few sessions can be uncomfortable, just as any new treatment can be. As the adhesions break up and the muscles heal, the pain will be less.

Is it the same as massage therapy?
NO. Active Release Technique therapy is NOT like a massage you get at a spa.  Only those medical professionals who have undergone training can perform ART. ART uses the range of motion at the muscle to aid it.

How long does it take?
Most patients who undergo ART therapy need only a few sessions, but each patient is unique.  For those suffering from nerve entrapment, treatment to free the nerves may take more or less time than for those suffering with acute pulls or strains. The initial session usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour, though subsequent sessions may be over in as little as 15 minutes.

Can non-athletes benefit from ART?
YES! Active Release Techniques can be used for a variety of pains. Though most patients come in for sports injury treatments, ART has also proven successful in helping those with knee and shoulder pain, chronic headaches, tight tendons and fascia.

Does insurance cover ART?
ART is covered by most insurance companies. Be sure to contact your representative before beginning treatment, to see if it’s covered by your particular carrier.

Is ART safe?
Yes. ART is a noninvasive, non-surgical option to help alleviate muscle pain. The treatment is devised as a way to help work through scar tissue to increase a muscle’s range of motion without having to “go under the knife.”
